An inmate died Friday after collapsing at the county jail, according to the Clarke County Sheriff's Office.

Calvin Jamain Cunningham, 44, was serving a sentence for a misdemeanor probation violation, according to a statement released by the sheriff's office Friday evening.

Cunningham reportedly collapsed at about 2:50 p.m. while walking up some stairs in a housing unit.

"After extensive efforts by deputies and medical staff to stabilize his condition, he was transported to the hospital by EMS where he was pronounced dead," the sheriff's office said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was notified and is handling investigation.

The GBI investigates all in-custody deaths in Georgia.

According to the release from the sheriff's office, "Initial assessments of the incident indicate that Mr. Cunningham died of natural causes. The body will be transported to the GBI crime lab for further medical examination."
