Pedestrian killed while crossing West Broad Street in Athens

By Joe Johnson

Athens-Clarke County police are investigating a collision Wednesday night in which an elderly man was killed by a truck as he crossed West Broad Street.

At about 9:38 p.m., officers were dispatched to the incident that occurred in front of Cadence Bank, 2234 W. Broad St.

Officers arrived to find a pedestrian, 78-year-old Carl Lyle Freeman of Greensboro, deceased in the roadway.

The driver of the 2001 Ford Ranger that struck him, 27-year-old Winder resident Bobby Jack Worley, remained on the scene, police said.

An investigation determined that the pickuptruck was traveling west in West Broad Street’s outer lane at the same time Freeman was walking northbound across the street, apparently from Cadence Bank to the FedEx Store, according to police.

Freeman made it across six lanes of travel prior to being struck by the truck, according to police, who noted that it was raining at the time and the scene was not well lit.

The collision was undergoing further investigation, police said Thursday morning.
