A woman was arrested this week for allegedly bludgeoning another woman at an east Athens street corner nearly three months ago,
According to Athens-Clarke police, Emily Lillian Cooper, 55, of East Broad Street was walking with another woman on Arch Street early the morning of Sept. 27 when they got into an argument.
“The disagreement escalated, and Cooper struck the victim in the back of her head with a hard object,” police Public Information Officer Geof Gilland said.
“The victim fell to the street and witnesses said that Cooper left the scene towards Gressom Street,” Gilland said.
The victim, a 42-year-old Freeman Drive resident was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, Gilland said.
Police subsequently obtained warrants charging Cooper with two counts of aggravated assault.
She was taken into custody during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon, in which she was additionally charged with operating an unregistered vehicle, driving without a valid license, no proof of vehicle insurance, and giving false information to police.
Cooper was booked into the Clarke County Jail with the Salvation Army homeless shelter on Hawthorne Avenue as her address.
