Bring a candle and a friend to The Arch at the University of Georgia on Friday, July 12 for Lights for Liberty: Athens Vigil.
The international event, scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. is expected to attract thousands of people to locations around the world as well as at immigrant detention centers across America to protest the inhumane conditions faced by migrants.
Deeply troubled by the reports coming out of the camps – some describing concentration camp-like conditions – Deborah Gonzalez, host of “Open Records with Deborah Gonzalez,” singer songwriter Caroline Aiken, JoBeth Allen from U-Lead Athens, and more have banded together to bring Athens together for this loving and peaceful gathering.
The Athens vigil will focus on the young people caught up in this human rights crisis – children separated from their families who are denied basic necessities such as toothpaste, soap and beds to sleep on – as well as being separated from their parents.
Let us come together to show we care.
Donations for RAICES, TEXAS will be accepted to help fund legal representation and provide support to the families at the border.
Main speakers for the event include: Leanne Purdam, Jo Beth Allen, and Deborah Gonzalez.
Co-hosts include U-Lead Athens, Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement Group, Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC),Economic Justice Coalition, dignidad Inmigrante En Athens,Interfaith Sanctuary Coalition - Athens, Community Support for Families in Crisis - Athens and Athens for Everyone
