Oconee County town hall concerning changes to homestead exemptions

The Oconee County Government will host a Town Hall Meeting on April 16, 2024. It will take place at the Oconee County Administrative Building. The meeting will focus on changes to the homestead exemption. Residents will have the chance to share their views with the Oconee County Commissioners.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at 7635 Macon Highway, Watkinsville. The changes to the homestead exemption will be voted on in the May 21 election. Town Hall Meetings are a common way for citizens to communicate with commissioners.

If you can't attend in person, the meeting will be live streamed on Zoom. You can find connection details on the Oconee County Government's website.

If I understand his question, of course the old exemptions would end to make room for the newer better exemptions

Potential Changes to Homestead Exemptions:

"The general homestead exemption will increase from $2,000 to $5,000

In 2035, the general homestead exemption will increase again to $10,000

At age 65, the assessed value of the property will automatically be frozen

At age 75, an additional $10,000 will automatically be added to the property’s homestead exemption"

What I don't understand if this statement:

"If passed, all current homestead exemptions will be phased out over time"

Can somebody explain? Thanks

That wasn’t his question. The question is why is there a phase-out when the exemption is set?
