Prisoners who died in Athens jail identified

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office today identified the two men who recently died while in custody at the Lexington Road jail county jail.

Torrance Bernard Bishop, who was 39 years old and homeless had been at the jail since November on charges of entering a vehicle with intent to commit theft, criminal trespass, and loitering/prowling.

He died on April 22nd.

Shabazz Sangria Wingfield, 32, of Rolling Ridge Drive, had been in custody since January for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and related charges.

He died yesterday, May 5th.

According to the sheriff’s office both men had suffered apparent medical emergencies and did not survive despite life saving efforts by jail staff, firefighters and EMS.

As is protocol for people who die while in the custody of law enforcement, the deaths are being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
