Downtown bar patron arrested for recklessly firing gun

By Joe Johnson

Patrick Abercrombie, 29, of Hawthorne Extension, was arrested late the evening of September 9th after he accidentally fired a gun outside of a bar in downtown Athens.

He reportedly had been in Cutters Pub on East Clayton Street when he took another man out to the parking lot to show off a Glock 9mm pistol that was in his car.

The gun went off while Abercrombie was handling it, firing a round into the display window of Kum’s Fashions. The store owner valued the damage to be around $1000.

With slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, Abercrombie admitted to police that he had been drinking.

“I then decided at this time, due to the location of where the firearm was discharged, along with putting several people in danger, he would be arrested for for reckless conduct,” an officer said in a report.

Abercrombie was transported to the county jail and was later released upon posting $25 cash bail.

An arraignment is scheduled for November 12th.
