Elderly man beaten in eastside Athens robbery

By Joe Johnson

An 88-year-old man was beaten and robbed outside of his home in east Athens Tuesday morning,

Robert Lee Roach was leaving his home on Arch Street to go visit his cousin and the neighborhood when at the foot of his driveway he was approached by Charie Lafaye Hill who asked for money.

When he said that he didn’t have any money, Hill reportedly said to Roach, “I know you got some” and began punching the elderly victim, knocking him to the ground and continuing to beat him.

Hill then went through the man’s pockets and stole his empty wallet and house keys.

Roach flagged down a neighbor who was driving by and asked them to call 911.

Hill fled as police arrived in the neighborhood but officers soon found the 40-year-old suspect on Vine Street and arrested her on charges of robbery, battery, and inflicting pain on an elderly victim.

Hill is being held without bail in pretrial detention.
