Second victim in Athens shooting dies

By Joe Johnson

A second person has died from injuries sustained during a shooting incident this week in the Stonehenge neighborhood of west Athens.

According to Athens-Clarke County police, 21-year-old Casey Parten of Flowery Branch was shot Monday afternoon on Marlborough Downs Road in the incident in which 16-year-old Ashawn Adams was killed and Parten was severely wounded.

Parten died in the hospital on Wednesday, police said.

His brother, Tyler Parten, 24, was present during the incident but was not injured, police said.

According to asource close to the family, the Parten brothers came to Athens to purchase a motorcycle that had been advertised in Facebook Marketplace.

“We now know there was never a motorcycle and it was a setup," the source said. “They arrived and things immediately went bad.”

The woman said she did not want to discuss how the shooting incident unfolded because she did not want to jeopardize the police investigation.

Police initially said that officers responded to a reported shooting in Stonehenge at about 5:25 p.m. Monday and located Adams and Casey Parten with gunshot wounds in the 300 block of Marlborough Downs Road, surrounded by a group of people.

Adams was dead at the scene and Casey Parten was transported to the hospital by National EMS. Police said two guns were recovered at the crime scene.

Lt. Shaun Barnett, ACCPD’s public information officer said Thursday morning that he could not confirm any circumstances or motive involved with the incident.

He said detectives “anticipated wrapping up a couple more interviews this evening or tomorrow morning, and that “at the conclusion of the interviews I'll be able to release more details.”

Police asked for anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Lt. David Norris at (762) 400-7165 or david.norris@accgov.com. Tips can also be made by calling the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (706) 705-4775.
