The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office has been declining to answer questions concerning the deaths of three prisoners in jail this year as well as the recent hospitalizations of others prisoners who overdosed on drugs while in custody.

Instead, Sheriff John Q. Williams today released an announcement that he will address those incidents next week at a press conference:

Athens, GA — July 10, 2025 — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In response to recent medical emergencies and the tragic death involving individuals in custody at the Athens-Clarke County Jail, Sheriff John Q. Williams will hold a press conference to address the incidents and provide updates on the ongoing investigations.

The press conference will highlight the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the safety of all jail residents and staff. Sheriff Williams will discuss the collaborative efforts with external investigative agencies, review current jail protocols, and outline additional measures aimed at preventing future incidents.
