A Jefferson man has been arrested and charged with murder for the shooting death of another resident of the small Jackson County city last month.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 36-year-old Edwin Garcia-Alonzo is accused of murdering Mateo Gomez Lucas. The suspect was itaken into custody in Hall County on Sunday, the GBI said.
According to the GBI, which the Jefferson Police Department asked to assist in the investigation, the JPD notified them of the shooting thay occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on Aug. 18 and were told that Gomez had been shot near the intersection of the U.S. Highway 129 business route and Storey Lane, located near Sunshine Self Storage and Faith Baptist Church of Jefferson.
The victim died after being transported to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman said that a motive for the slaying had yet to be established.
He’s lucky he didn’t shoot an innocent bystander.
