Teen injured in possible drive-by shooting in north Athens neighborhood

By Joe Johnson

An Athens teen reportedly was injured by gunfire Monday morning in a northside neighborhood.

According to Athens-Clarke County police, 18-year-old Jatavion Dunn of Spring Valley Road, was shot three times when he was outside in the 300 block of Burkland Lane, police said.

The shooting was reported at 9:37 a.m. by a neighbor whose house was also struck by gunfire, police said. No one in the residence was injured.

Dunn was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by National EMS, police said.

Police said they did not believe that Dunn was shot in an exchange of gunfire, but may have been shot by someone in a passing vehicle.

“The incident is still under investigation, but at this time it is not believed that the victim fired a weapon,” said Lt. Shaun Barnett, ACCPD’s public information officer.

"It is believed that the suspect left the scene in a vehicle and we are not ruling out that the shooter was inside of a vehicle when this incident occurred," Barnett said.

Police asked for anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective David Harrison at 762-400-7361 or david.harrison@accgov.com.

Is this unrelated to the police officers being assaulted on Spring Valley Road?
