Two people, including a University of Georgia student, reportedly were shot in downtown Athens early Saturday and a suspect was quickly taken into custody.

According to Athens-Clarke County police Lt. Shaun Barnett, officers were dispatched at 12:12 a.m. to investigate a reported fight in the area of Tropical Bar in the 200 block of West Clayton Street.

While officers were responding, they were approached by a someone who stated there was a shooting in the same area that they were headed, said Barnett, ACCPD’s public information officer.

“Upon arrival, officers located two individuals with gunshot wounds, a 30-year-old man and a 22-year-old female,” he said. “I don't have any update on their conditions but initial information indicated that the injuries were non-life-threatening. “

Bystanders later told Classic City News that the woman was a UGA student who got shot in the hand, and it appeared like the man had been shot in the face.

The police spokesman confirmed Sunday that the man was shot in the face.

He said the man "is expected to survive."

According to Barnett, witnesses were able to point out the suspect to responding officers, and as a result, Corey Treyvon Austin, 24, of Lawrenceville was arrested.

The Athens-Clarke County Jail’s website indicates Austin was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He was being detained without bail as of Saturday afternoon.
