The following was released Tuesday evening by the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office:
On the afternoon of July 8, 2025, at approximately 5:00 PM, the staff at the Athens-Clarke County Jail discovered an individual with an unknown medical issue inside one of the housing units.
Upon entering the unit, staff found an unresponsive 28-year-old white male. Immediate life-saving measures were initiated by jail personnel, and medical staff were notified without delay. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded and transported the conscious individual to an area hospital.
Later that same afternoon, at approximately 5:26 PM, staff were alerted to a second unresponsive individual in a separate cell, a 36-year-old African American male. As with the earlier incident, jail personnel responded immediately with life-saving measures and alerted medical staff. EMS and the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department (ACCFD) responded promptly and transported the individual to an area hospital for medical evaluation.
Both individuals are being evaluated for suspected drug overdoses after deputies found suspected drugs inside the housing unit.
No further information is available at this time.
