3 UGA football players charged with reckless driving this week

Updated: Jul 13

Smael Mondon (l) and Bo Hughley

Three University of Georgia football players were arrested or cited this week for separate driving incidents.

Johnathan Hughley was booked into jail the night of July 9 on charges of failure to maintain lane/improper driving and reckless driving. The charges stem from his arrest by UGA police for his involvement in a single-car crash.

Smael Mondon was jailed the following night on charges of reckless driving and racing after an incident on West Broad Street in which he reportedly drove at least 75 mph in a 40 mph speed zone while allegedly racing UGA teammate Demello Le Jones, who was issued citations.

Hughley is a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, Mondon is a senior linebacker, and Jones is a freshman cornerback.

Mondon’s Dodge Charger displayed a “SMILEY” vanity Georgia tag.

There have been several arrests and driving-related incidents involving UGA players since the January 2023 racing-related deaths of offensive lineman Devin Willock and football program staffer Chandler LeCroy.

So IF they have NIL deals/sponsors, they may be risking that $$$. Bad publicity /criminal acts...and they may have something to that effect in their contracts. Sponsors may drop them. That may hurt them worse than anything UGA will/might do.

No worries, UGA has their backs. Football is more important to UGA than peoples lives.

Replying to

They’ll get the “Bulldog Special” which consists of great concern by the athletic department and a stern talking to by the court. Add in a minimal fine and justice has been served. Until the next time.

I think one of the freshmen was driving a Porsche. This is not the same Red & Black I grew up cheering. As the season nears I fear my love for UGA will turn to disdain. Sigh

Time to lower the boom on these guys, penalize them in not playing for 3-5 games. Repeat offenders, kick off team !
