The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department today released the following:
The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department proudly participated in the “Women in Science” Open House held Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Sandy Creek Nature Center.
The event celebrated the remarkable contributions of women in science and highlighted achievements across fields including biology, ecology, astronomy, environmental science, and public safety. Learners of all ages attended the interactive program to explore science-based careers and hear inspiring stories from women making an impact in their professions.

In support of the event’s mission, ACCFD was represented by an all-female crew of firefighters who engaged with attendees throughout the day. The crew shared insights into careers in the fire service, emergency response, fire investigation, and life safety education—demonstrating how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) play a critical role in modern firefighting operations.
From fire behavior and building construction to hazardous materials response and emergency medical care, firefighters rely on scientific principles every day to protect lives and property. The crew discussed the application of fire dynamics, thermal imaging technology, rescue physics, and medical science in emergency situations, helping young attendees see the strong connection between science education and careers in public safety.

“The fire service is built on science,” said Chief Nate Moss. “Whether we’re calculating water flow, analyzing fire patterns, or responding to technical rescues, STEM knowledge is at the core of what we do. We are proud to have our female firefighters serve as role models for the next generation.”
ACCFD’s participation underscores the department’s continued commitment to community engagement, public education, and encouraging young women to pursue careers in STEM-related fields—including the fire service.
