On the night of November 17th a University of Georgia student was crossing North Lumpkin Street when she was knocked down by a car that ran over her foot .

The 20-year-old student became the seventh person to be struck by a vehicle this year while in a downtown Athens pedestrian crosswalk.

One of those pedestrians, 78-year-old Guy Jones was killed when struck in January on North Thomas Street near the Classic Center. His teenage companion also was struck and injured. Police arrested the driver for vehicular homicide.

Then in April a group of pedestrians was struck by a car in a crosswalk outside the Live Wire event venue at the corner of North Hull and Dougherty streets.

Two were injured badly enough to be transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The motorist who struck the UGA student last month had left the scene, but police were able to identify him as a 36-year-old Athens man who they arrested for failing to yield to a pedestrian and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
