The pre-appropriated term “woke” is a word that goes back to the 1930s. It was a term used by African Americans to describe their awareness of social and political issues affecting the African American community.
As activist Marcus Garvey said to the Negro Mine Workers in 1940, "We were asleep. But we will stay woke from now on” Garvey’s statement is included in the NCAA report Reclaiming the Word “Woke” as Part of African American Culture.
During the 2014 Ferguson, Missouri, protests regarding the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, BLM activists popularized the term. Soon thereafter, white BLM supporters effectively appropriated the term to mean comprehensive social justice. It became a battle cry of the Social Justice Worker and then mocked by conservative Americans and used by this group as a pejorative.
With the beginning of Trump’s second administration, Executive orders focused on America’s woke culture are flying out of the White House like paper airplanes.
He has removed the affirmative action requirement for federal government contractors.
DEI programs are being eliminated at the federal level because they, according to the Executive Order, create “immense public waste and shameful discrimination.”
Trump signed an Executive Order stating that the federal government will recognize only biological gender, clearly an affront to the LGBTQ+ community.
These executive orders gave me great pause. Aside from the negative political concession of the gender decision, the first two are worthy of more serious consideration.
I have always longed for the day that Affirmative Action would be nothing more than a vestige of past inequality. That it would no longer be necessary to treat being in a minority, being a woman, being gay, or expressing non-traditional sexuality as a handicap.
As Sandra Day O’Conner said in 2003 when a Supreme Court decision affirmed race-conscious admission policies, “We expect that 25 years from now, the use of racial preferences will no longer be necessary to further the interest [in student body diversity] approved today.”
Then 20 years later, that’s exactly what happened. The Supreme Court in 2023 ruled race-conscious decisions in college admissions are unconstitutional. It is certainly a pleasant thought that this decision signals a change that we are moving toward a more equal society.
It’s too early to assess the effect of this decision, but hopefully the days to come will support that wokeness has been successful. We have achieved the goal that equal consideration will yield equal results.
At the same time, will the reduction in DEI and Affirmative Action programs support the success of wokeness?
We can hope. However, a shift is taking place. The onus of building a woke America is shifting from reliance on the law to reliance on the society itself.
This is certainly not the time for dozing off, but staying wide awake.
