Arrests made for 2022 Athens gang murder

By Joe Johnson

Two purported members of an Athens street gang have been arrested for a gang-related murder that occurred two years ago.

The arrests stemmed from a presentation of evidence Tuesday to a Clarke County Superior Court grand jury, which returned indictments charging Shamon "Trendy " Elder Jr. and Jacquavious "Glockboy" Smith with the murder of 19-year-old Brynarius Smith.

The case was investigated by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department with assistance from the Attorney General’s Gang Prosecution Unit.

The indictments charge the suspects as being members of the Red Tape Gang, which has been described by the Georgia Attorney General's Office as "a local hybrid criminal street gang with ties to major national Bloods, including Sex Money Murder and the Rollin’ 20s."

The indictment charges Elder and J. Smith with murder for fatally shooting B. Smith on April 16, 2022, outside the victim's home on Cone Drive in the Nellie B Homes apartment complex.

Elder had already been in custody since August on unrelated charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault charge, and J. Smith was arrested shortly after the indictments were returned.
