An Athens man was recently arrested after firing several gunshots into an occupied residence on Dwight Road.

Although 31-year-old Rakeim Hillsman didn’t shoot from a vehicle, he was charged under the new state statute that defines a driveby shooting as

“when a person discharges a firearm from a motor vehicle or immediately after exiting a vehicle with the intent to injure another person or damage property.”

The crime is punishable by a maximum of 20 years imprisonment upon conviction.

The incident for which Hillsman was arrested occurred on April 30.

One of the residents of the home that was shot up told police she had been the intended target because of animosity between her and Hillsman’s sister.

Hillsman was denied bail by a Magistrate Court judge.
