Athens man indicted for alleged rape

A Clarke County grand jury recently indicted an Athens man for allegedly forcibly raping a teenage victim at his home three months ago.

Zachary Lee Underwood, 20, is accused of raping the 19-year-old woman early the morning of July 9 at his home on Midlands Place in a neighborhood off Whit Davis Road, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Police arrested Underwood on a warrant six days after the alleged assault, according to Clarke County Superior Court records.

Underwood was released from jail on Aug. 1, upon posting a $27,700 good security bond and the indictment was filed on Oct. 1, according to court records.

Underwood is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 12.

Anyone who has been sexually assaulted or knows someone who has can contact The Cottage Sexual Assault Center and Children’s Advocacy Center.

The agency provides a range of free services to child and adult students of sexual and physical abuse, including medical accompaniment, advocacy, referrals, counseling and support groups. The Cottage also maintains a 24-hour hotline at (877) 363-1912.

For UGA students affected by relationship and sexual violence, the University Health Center’s Relationship & Sexual Violence Prevention program provides crisis intervention and support, safety planning, medical and legal accompaniment, and academic and housing accommodations.
