An Athens man this week was indicted for murder in a shooting death last year at Bethel Midtown Village, an apartment complex located off College Avenue north of downtown.

According to Athens-Clarke County police, Joseph Desmonde Baughns, 36, of Athens fatally shot 34-year-old Jarred Lamar Sanders of Gainesville during an argument that escalated to violence.

Sanders was killed by a single gunshot to the chest, according to police.

He was a former resident of Athens who was back in town visiting when he was shot.

Baughns fled the complex and avoided capture for two days until he turned himself in.

He has been incarcerated without bail being set ever since, and on Tuesday a Clarke County grand jury indicted him for malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Baughns is scheduled to be arraigned on July 21.
