Athens man robbed of gun at gunpoint

An Athens man reportedly was arrested early Wednesday for an alleged armed robbery in which he stole a gun from another man.

According to a press release issued by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officers responded at about 12:30 a. m. to a reported armed robbery that occurred in the 2300 block of West Broad Street.

The victim, a 25-year-old Athens man said he was approached by the suspect “who then pointed a firearm at the victim, and stole an item from the victim’s person at gunpoint, according to the release.

ACCPD Public Information Officer Lt. Shaun Barnett identified the stolen item as a firearm.

Officers reportedly were able to identify and locate the suspect, 30-year-old Melvin Lamar-Jerome Roberts, who lives in the 2400 block of West Broad Street.

He was arrested and charged with armed robbery.
