Athens officer goes extra mile for man in need

When Sgt. Robie Cochran made contact with the 75-old man on East Clayton Street it was readily apparent to the Athens police officer that the man had mental health concerns.
The disheveled and confused man refused to go to the hospital for fear of being admitted to the psych ward, but the officer convinced him by promising a shower without having to be admitted.
He then expressed concern about the dirty underwear he had on, but Cochran told him that he would buy him new underwear if he went to the hospital.
After showering and donning clean clothes that Cochran had obtained, the man was discharged because medical staff found no reason keep him.
In the meantime, the person who had reported the man as missing in Atlanta was contacted by police and he advised that he would drive to Athens to get the him.
