Athens teen killed by gunfire at eastside apartment complex

By Joe Johnson An Athens teen was fatally shot early Saturday morning at an eastside apartment complex. According to Athens-Clarke County police Lt. Shaun Barnett, officers responded at about 2 a.m. to investigate a 911 call reporting that there had been a shooting in which someone had been shot on Cone Drive in the Nellie B Homes apartment complex. Upon arrival, officers located 19-year-old Brynarius Smith, who had been shot multiple times, near his home on Cone Drive, said Barnett, ACCPD’s public information officer, Barnett would not say if there were signs that Smith also had fired a gun. “Because of the ongoing nature of this investigation, we are not releasing information about evidence recovered,” he said.
