Athens woman dies in fatal house fire

The following was released today by the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department

Just before noon on April 24, 2026, the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 121 Sapphire Court on Athen’s east side.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke conditions coming from the residence. Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive interior fire attack. During operations, crews encountered significant hoarding conditions that impeded access and movement within the home.

Firefighters located and rescued an adult female victim from inside the residence. The victim was transferred to National EMS for medical care; however, despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The fire was brought under control, and no firefighters were reported injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
