A 26-year-old Athens woman reportedly was killed Thursday morning when her SUV crashed into a tractor-trailer truck in Barrow County.
According to Georgia State Patrol Sgt. First Class Tim Meyer, troopers from GSP Post 32 in Athens responded at about 7:11 a.m. to investigate the crash on Ga. Highway 316 at Barber Creek Road.
He said the investigation determined that the tractor-trailer was entering 316 from Barber Creek Road/Eighth Street in Statham on the north side of the highway.
According to Meyer, the truck driver was attempting to travel east on 316 but had to stop in the crossover, yielding to eastbound traffic.
While stopped, the truck’s trailer was left blocking the westbound lanes of 316 and the Athens woman’s westbound subcompact Honda HRV crashed into and went under the trailer, killing the driver, the trooper said.
The truck driver, whose identity had yet to be released, was determined to have been at fault, according to Meyer. The driver was charged with improper stopping on a roadway and second-degree homicide by vehicle, both misdemeanors.
The deceased woman’s identity was being withheld pending notification of family.
Classic City News will update this story when the woman’s identity is released.
