A 3-month-old boy died Sunday morning after he was found unresponsive in bed at his home on Tallassee Road.

The child’s mother was working at the time and her cousin was caring for him, according to police.

The cousin reported last seeing the baby leeping on its side between herself and an adult male, with his arms wrapped around his bottle between 5:30-6 a.m.

The male told police when he woke up the baby was on its stomach and unresponsive when checking on him.

He called 911 at 8:28 a.m. and EMS transported the child to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him deceased.

Detectives responded to the home and hospital to interview the involved parties.

“This case is under investigation, but currently no foul play is suspected,” said Lt. Katie Jenkins, public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

An autopsy is planned at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s forensics laboratory.
