A 44-year-old Bogart man reportedly died early Thursday morning after being struck by a car in western Athens-Clarke County.
Officers responded at around 6:25 p.m. to the area where Richard Shawn Hatcher had been walking in the westbound lane of Cleveland Road near Hanover Drive when a 2013 Toyota Sequoia traveling in the same direction struck him from behind, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
Hatcher, who lived on Cleveland Road, was transported by EMS to the hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.
The Toyota's driver, a 43-year-old woman from Bogart, remained at the scene and was not immediately charged.
An investigation was ongoing, and police asked for anyone with information about the incident to contact Senior Police Officer Dustin Tilley at 762-400-7355 or dustin.tilley@accgov.com.
Police noted the incident involved the county's 11th traffic fatality in 2022.
Not to trample on his grave, but he was probably on something. He’s been in and out of jail and when I was a deputy for CCSO, his girlfriend was hit and killed on Prince Ave, down from Athens Regional.
This is why you walk on the left side of the road. That way you can see the cars coming at you.
