UGA Presents is proud to present Drum Tao, a spectacular fusion of traditional Japanese drumming, contemporary performance, and athletic theatricality, Friday, February 6, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall at the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.
Renowned worldwide for their explosive energy and precision, Drum Tao has redefined the art of wadaiko (traditional Japanese drumming) for modern audiences. Their newest production, The Best, is a powerful distillation of the ensemble’s most celebrated works — a visually striking, rhythm-driven performance that blends ancient Japanese tradition with modern music, movement, and design. With performances seen by more than 10 million spectators across the globe, Drum Tao has sold out theaters in 26 countries, earning critical acclaim for their bold artistry and unforgettable live shows.
Founded in Japan and based in the dramatic natural landscapes of Oita Prefecture, Drum Tao is known for its distinctive aesthetic — combining thunderous taiko drums, elegant costuming, and tightly synchronized choreography. Their performances feature a wide range of traditional Japanese instruments, including massive taiko drums, bamboo flutes, and stringed instruments, all woven together with contemporary rhythms and dynamic staging. According to the ensemble, their mission is to “create a new form of entertainment using Japanese tradition as a foundation,” a goal vividly realized in The Best.
Audiences can expect a performance full of intensity and spectacle, as the ensemble’s physically demanding drumming style is matched by dramatic lighting, bold visual storytelling, and moments of surprising beauty and restraint. The result is a high-impact experience that transcends language, appealing equally to longtime fans of world music and first-time concertgoers.
This performance in the UGA Presents 30th anniversary season is supported by Janet Rodekohr and by Muriel and Harold Pritchett.
