Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Athens-Clarke County Jail.
According to the sheriff’s office, the 52-year-old white male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell just after 5 a.m. Tuesday.
“Jail and medical staff immediately began life saving efforts while emergency responders were in route,” the sheriff’s office noted in a statement. “The male was transported by EMS and later pronounced deceased at the hospital.”
The prisoner’s body was turned over to the county coroner, and the Georgia Bureau Investigation will be conducting an investigation, as the agency does with all in-custody deaths.
"There is no foul play suspected at this time, Athens-Clarke Sheriff John Q. Williams said.
The prisoner's name was not being immediately released because “we have not been able to notify appropriate family members,” the sheriff said late Tuesday afternoon.
