The man whose body was discovered after fire destroyed his home in west Athens last week has been identified as an elderly widower who lived alone.

Richard Moseley, 73, had lived alone at 203 Briarcliff Road since the passing last June of his wife, Kaaren Kilbow Moseley.

When firefighters responded to the reported fire at about 2:18 a.m. May 19th they encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the dwelling.

Even after bringing the blaze under control, they were unable to enter because the remaining structure was unstable.

It wasn’t until over three hours later that firefighters discovered Moseley’s body amid the ruins.

An autopsy has been conducted at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s forensic laboratory, where medical examiners continue trying to determine whether Moseley died prior to or during the fire.
