A former Athens teacher has been acquitted of a charge that she had sex with one of her students.

Following a three-day trial, a Clarke County jury on Wednesday acquitted 26-year-old Kara Elizabeth Coalson of a single count of sexual assault of a student.

Athens-Clarke County police arrested Coalson in April 2018, after school officials notified police that the Clarke Central High School math teacher had sexual relations at her home with a 16-year-old student.

Coalson and the student, now 18, reportedly both testified before the jury voted to acquit her.

Coalson was fired by the school district and lost her license to teach as a result of the student’s allegation.
