Fugitive charged with posing as deputy to commit armed robberies

Released by the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office

(Gwinnett County, Ga., February 6, 2026) – On January 9, 2026, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit was alerted by the Gwinnett County Police Department that a group of suspects were impersonating Sheriff’s Office deputies to commit armed robberies.

The Fugitive Unit located Samuel Baxter after surveillance, and with assistance from the Georgia State Patrol, conducted a traffic stop after he exited a residence and entered a gray Nissan Sentra in DeKalb County.

Due to Baxter’s noncompliance, controlled techniques were used to place him on the ground. An ambulance was requested as a precaution; however, Baxter declined medical attention and was transported to Gwinnett County Police Headquarters for an interview with GCPD detectives.

Baxter has been charged with Home Invasion, Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission or Attempt to Commit a Felony. He currently remains in custody at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond. This is an active and ongoing investigation.
