The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said they were investigating the fatal shooting of a man by sheriff's deputies in Walton County.
According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that just before noon Monday, Walton County deputies responded to 1973 GA Hwy 11 in Monroe. Their response was the second one that day from a neighbor calling 911.
The neighbor reported that a man at that address -- identified as 63-year-old Dennis McCullers was acting violently and holding a baseball bat and possibly a handgun, the GBI said.
"When deputies arrived at the address, they encountered McCullers, who was holding a handgun,"the GBI said in a news release. "WCSO deputies attempted to get McCullers to drop his weapon. McCullers then pointed the weapon at the deputies. The deputies fired at McCullers, striking him, and he died."
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on McCullers' remains, and the state agency was asked by the Sheriff's Office to conduct an independent investigation of the incident which, when completed, the case file will be given to the Alcovy Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
The GBI noted in its statement that the incident marked the 86th officer-involved shooting they have been asked to investigate in 2022.
