A suspect has been arrested in a smash-and grab burglary of a downtown Athens boutique in which designer merchandise valued at $16,000 was stolen from a window display.
According to Sgt. Paul Davidson, a supervisor in the Athens-Clarke County police Property Crimes Unit, a detective identified 39-year-old Dantonio Demarkius Daniel as the suspect from downtown surveillance camera footage.
Daniel allegedly used a hammer after the close of business Friday to break the front window of Agora Vintage on East Broad Street and steal high-end vintage designer products that included a Fendi purse, a Louis Vuitton purse and backpack, and a Chanel handbag, according to the report.
Using the surveillance camera footage, Davidson said that Detective Jonathan Simms was able to track Daniel to an apartment at the Bethel Midtown Village complex several blocks away from the crime scene. Daniel was questioned upon leaving the apartment, at which time he confessed to the crime, Davidson said.
While executing a search warrant at Daniel’s apartment, investigators recovered a purse he stole from Agora Vintage and a bag that had been stolen from a vehicle, David said, and a second purse was recovered from a neighbor who purchased it from Daniel.
Daniel was booked into the county jail at 2:53 p.m. Thursday on a second-degree burglary charge, and he was being held without bond being set.
