An Athens man was recently arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a nine-year-old child.

According to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Christopher Mark David of Whit Davis Road was booked into the county jail Aug. 13 on two counts each of child molestation and sexual battery on a child under 16, as well as single counts of simple battery and false imprisonment.

Athens-Clarke County police said the incident report was non-releasable due to the victim's age and nature of the crime.

However, Capt. Christopher Nichols, commanding officer of the Criminal Investigations Division, confirmed the child’s age and said the alleged assault occurred the same day that David was arrested.

David was being detained without bail being set.

Anyone who has been sexually assaulted or knows someone who has can contact The Cottage Sexual Assault Center and Children's Advocacy Center.
