A Madison County man shot and killed an Athens man late Tuesday afternoon, Athens-Clarke County police said.

The shooting occurred at the Apex Chevron gas station at about 4:45 p.m. when Reginald Lang Kelley, 40, of Colbert fatally shot 52-year-old Mark Alden Howard of Berry Drive, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found a crowd of people there, some of whom pointed to Howard’s body on the ground bleeding, and others said that Kelley, who was standing with other males by the store's front door was the shooter.

Kelley did not deny he was the shooter and he indicated that the gun had been set down on newspaper stand nearby, according to police.

Kelley was taken into custody, and at about 10 p.m. he was booked into the county jail on charges of malice murder, felony murder and second-degree murder, according to the jail’s website.

Athens-Clarke County Deputy Police Chief Jerry Saulters said he did not believe an altercation had proceeded the shooting, and that detectives on Wednesday continued trying to establish a motive.

Kelly was being detained without bail.

Police asked that anyone with information related to this homicide contact Lt. David Norris at (762) 400-7165 or david.norris@accgov.com.
