Athens man killed in one-car accident

By Joe Johnson

An Athens man was killed this weekend after his car reportedly drove off Buddy Christian Way and crashed into a ravine.

According to Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson, 68-year-old Henry Faust Jr.’s body was found in the car Sunday morning at the bottom of a ravine that was well below road level.

According to a Nixle alert, police closed the roadway between Winterville and Cherokee roads between about 11:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Sunday as they investigated.

Wilson estimated that the wreck occurred sometime after 7 p.m. Saturday, but it was not discovered until a motorist saw the car Sunday morning.

“Based on the temperature and condition of (Faust’s) remains, it happened during the night,” the coroner said. “He had been there for several hours” prior to being found.

Faust had a driver's license on him that had an address in Carlton, Wilson said, but he had most recently ben residing at Hallmark Estates off Spring Valley Road.

Lt. Jonathan McIlvaine, commanding officer of the Athens-Clarke County police Traffic Unit said that more information should be available on Monday.
