An Athens man reportedly was shot Saturday night as he sat in his car at a westside apartment complex.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report, officers responded to Rocksprings Homes on a 6:58 p.m. report of gunshots being heard on Rocksprings Court.

An officer was searching the area when he was flagged down by Rashad Allen, 38, of Catalpa Drive who said that he’d been shot, according to the report, which noted when Allen exited his car the officer saw that his shirt had blood on it.

While the officer called for EMS to be dispatched to the location, other officers provided first aid to a gunshot wound to Allen’s neck, according to the report.

The report notes that Allen said that he had gotten into an argument earlier in the day with 38-yea-old Sanchez Aaron Smith, and that he was sitting in his car when Smith returned and “just started shooting” and then ran toward Paris Street.

Allen was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Athens-Clarke County police Public Information Officer Lt. Shaun Barnett said that a warrant was subsequently issued for Smith’s arrest on a charge of aggravated assault.

Smith remained at large as of Monday afternoon.

Police asked for anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Michael Carroll at (762) 400-7098 or michael.carroll@accgov.com.
