Athens woman dies a week after being struck by car

An Athens woman who was struck by a car in a private parking lot last week died in the hospital on Sunday, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Mary Gail Paul, 74, was in the parking lot of Athens Spine Center on King Avenue on Nov. 9 when she was struck by a vehicle being driven by another older woman, police said.

The victim broke some bones upon being knocked to the pavement, according to police.

Paul was transported to the hospital, where, police said in a news release “the women’s condition continued to deteriorate and on November 15, she succumbed to her injuries."

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and “is being questioned by our Traffic Unit investigators,” according to the release.

Police said the investigation remained active and anyone who may have witnessed or have information related to this incident should contact Traffic Unit commander Lt. John McIlvaine of our Traffic Unit at (762) 400-7089.
