Athens woman dies from injuries sustained in two-vehicle crash

By Joe Johnson

An Athens woman died Wednesday from injuries she suffered over a week ago in a two-vehicle collision on Atlanta Highway.

Athens-Clarke County police identified the victim as 68-year-old Gloria Thurmond of Oglethorpe Avenue.

The fatal crash occurred the morning of May 3 when the driver of a 2007 Ford Edge in which Thurmond was a passenger made a left turn into Sam’s Club and into the path of a 2012 Dodge Journey that was traveling east on Atlanta Highway, according to police.

The driver of the Ford Edge, Victoria Moon, 49, of Athens, and both of her passengers, Thurmond and 47-year-old Michael Hanlon of Athens, were transported by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center with visible injuries, police said.

The driver of the Dodge Journey, Christopher Fletcher, 25, of Monroe, had a complaint of injury, police said, and his passenger, 54-year-old Eleanor Garmon, also of Monroe was transported by EMS to a hospital for treatment of visible injuries.

Any charges were pending completion of an investigation, according to police, who noted that the incident was the seventh fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County this year.
