Barrages of gunfire ring in the Fourth at Rolling Ridge

By Joe Johnson

In the early morning hours of Independence Day, police investigated complaints of more than 100 gunshots being fired at Rolling Ridge Apartments off Kathwood Drive.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report, 911 dispatchers began receiving the complaints at 4:16 a.m. Saturday about multiple groups of people firing guns at the complex, and while responding officers received information from the 911/Communications Center that people were still firing guns and that at least 100 rounds had been fired.

A witness told a responding officer that she saw a group of males who had been shooting guns get into a black car and leave Rolling Ridge, according to the report.

Numerous witnesses told officers they thought the males had been shooting into the air and not at anyone or anything, and the officers were unable to locate any victims or property damage caused by the shooting, according to the police report.

Officers identified four different scenes between and next to buildings where they recovered a total of 126 bullet cartridge casings – 87 from rifles and 38 from pistols, as well as one live pistol round, according to the report.

The Forensics Unit responded to the apartment complex photographed the different scenes and collected the casings to place them into evidence, the report noted.
