Man goes on window smashing spree in downtown Athens

A man was arrested early Tuesday after he reportedly went on a rampage in downtown Athens, smashing the windows of several businesses and vehicles.

According to Athens-Clarke County police Capt. John Radford, officers responded to the Washington Street area at about 2 a.m. to investigate a report of someone using rocks to vandalize businesses in the downtown district.

When officers responded to the area the suspect fled on foot but he was arrested without further incident following a brief foot chase, Bradford said.

At the time of the report, damage had been discovered to have bee done to at least six businesses and two vehicles.

The suspect, identified as Kevin Joseph Bennett, 33, Marietta, GA was booked into the Clarke County Jail on multiple counts of criminal damage and a count of obstruction of law enforcement.

Additionally, holds were placed on Bennett's release by the Georgia Board of Paroles and Pardons for a probation violation, and by the Elbert County Sheriff's Office on an aggravated battery charge, according to the local jail's website.
