Homicide victim Mark Alden Howard

One week after a Madison County man shot and killed an Athens man at a North Avenue convenience store and gas station, Athens-Clarke County police said Tuesday that the fatal shooting culminated a dispute between the victim and shooter,

The shooting occurred the afternoon of Aug. 25 at the Apex Chevron gas station, where police said Reginald Lang Kelley, 40, of Colbert fatally shot 52-year-old Mark Alden Howard of Berry Drive.

"As of today, we only know that there was some type of personal dispute between the two men," Athens-Clarke County police Public Information Officer Victoria Hunter said. "The investigation is ongoing to flesh out the specifics of this personal dispute."

According to Hunter, "It appears that both men arrived at the store to transact business and had an encounter with each other."

After the shooting, Kelley waited for police at the scene, having placed the gun he shot Howard with on top of a newspaper stand.
