An Athens man on Wednesday remained hospitalized in serious condition a week after he was shot at a westside apartment complex.
According to Athens-Clarke County police, 19-year-old Jason Faust was shot multiple times while in his SUV in the parking lot of Arbor Ridge Apartments off of Epps Bridge Road late the afternoon of Dec. 10.
He ran to a nearby RaceTrac, where police said he found someone to drive him to the hospital.
Police identified the shooter as Tivann Faust, 17, of Chateau Terrace. He is not related to Jason Faust, police said.
Faust was interviewed but not charged as the investigation continued, said Capt. Christopher Nichols, commanding officer of the Criminal Investigations Division.
“The shooting may be the result of defense of a third party,” Nichols said. “We are still sorting out the details.”
According to witness statements and 911 calls, police said that after as many as six gunshots were heard, Faust's SUV was seen backing up over a curb and then stop, with its windows shot up and occupied by three males and a female.
While Jason Faust and one of his passengers ran toward RaceTrac, police said, the vehicle's other occupants fled through some woods toward Kelly's Jamaican Foods, also on Epps Bridge Road.
Bullet cartridge casings were located outside the entrance of an apartment where police believe the incident began.
Police asked that anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Michael Carroll at (762) 400-7098 or michael.carroll @accgov.com.
