Police searching for suspect in series of thefts from Athens retail stores

By Joe Johnson

Athens-Clarke County police are searching for a man who is suspected of committing four thefts at businesses along Atlanta Highway over the last two weeks.

On Wednesday they released store surveillance photos of the suspect with the hope someone might help to identify him.

The suspect was driven to the businesses by a black female with blonde hair who was driving a silver Ford Escape.

Due to the location of the thefts being in the Atlanta Highway area, the suspect is likely to have some connection to this area, police said.

According to Property Crimes Unit Detective Nathaniel Franco, the first theft happened June 23 at Target, where the suspect stole a TV.

The suspect returned to the same store four days later and stole two more TVs, Franco said.

On June 28, he entered Target again and we are working to determine whether or not he committed a theft that date,” the detective said. “While investigating these cases, I found that this same male took approximately $156 worth of beer from Kroger on Alps Road on June 25.”

In the Kroger incident, the suspect ran from the store pushing a shopping cart containing six 30-packs of Bud Light and accidentally struck a woman’s car in the parking lot, according to a police incident report.

If anyone can identify the suspect, they are asked by police to contact Detective Franco at 762-400-7100 or nathaniel.franco@accgov.com.
