Investigation of elderly Athens man’s murder remains stymied one year later

By Joe Johnson

On the morning of August 26, 2023 Dwayne Watson went to his friend’s home in the Stonehenge neighborhood off Atlanta Highway to take 72-year-old Eugene Scott grocery shopping like he usually did on Saturdays.

After letting himself into the house on Old Monroe Road, he noticed that the television was on, and upon venturing further inside saw the stove also been left on. Watson was then startled to see that there on the kitchen floor, his elderly friend lay dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

When police arrived, Watson told them he knew of no reason why anyone would want to kill Scott.

“Dwayne started no, Eugene did not bother anyone or had problems with anyone,” it was noted in an Athens-Clarke County Police Department incident report, and detectives were unable to identify possible suspects or establish a motive for the murder.

Nothing appears to have changed in the ensuing 12 months.

“This is still a very active investigation,” is all an ACCPD spokesman would say this week about the case.

Police sources said that investigators were stumped,

“It’s a mystery,” a source said. “It could be aburglary gone bad but also could be drug related. It’s really hard to tell. Mr. Scott wasn’t a terrible dude. The only drugs he did was a little weed.”

ACCPD is asking for anyone who might have information related to this incident to contact Detective David Harrison at 762-400-7361 or david.harrison@accgov.com.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person or persons involved Eugene Scott’s murder.
