Man allegedly kicked student in stomach while intoxicated in downtown Athens

Justin Kyle Durden

By Joe Johnson

Justin Kyle Durden, 25, of Monroe, was arrested early the morning of July 14 after he allegedly kicked a student in the stomach on East Clayton Street.

The victim and witnesses told police that they were with a group of friends in front of the 1785 Bar & Grill when they were approached by Durden who antagonized them, using racial slurs, and calling the women whores.

A scuffle ensued during which Durden allegedly kicked the 23-year-old Latina victim in the stomach, knocking her to the ground.

An officer noted in an incident report that when he arrived in the scene, the altercation had just broken up and Durden appeared to be very intoxicated due to slurred speech and an inability to maintain balance.

He was booked into the county jail on charges of battery and disorderly conduct, and he was released later that afternoon upon posting bonds totaling $1,860.
