By Joe Johnson A man who was armed with a machete when he allegedly attacked an Athens-Clarke County police officer last weekend has been charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Wednesday mornin.
Salvador Salazar, 28, of North Carolina, remained in the hospital in serious condition, the GBI said.
The arrest warrant was turned over to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office for service, the GBI said.
According to police, officers responded to University Garden Apartments on Baxter Drive shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday to investigate a reported incident of domestic violence.
Soon after arriving at the complex, an officer encountered Salazar, who was involved in the incident, according to police.
“When officers arrived, they were confronted by a male subject from North Carolina who was armed with a machete,” the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a media release the day after the incident.
“The subject ignored commands from the officer to drop the machete and attacked one of the officers. The officer fired at the subject, striking him,” the GBI said.
